The Aging Myth
What does “aging” mean to you? The answer to that might depend on your age and will change over time. One thing we know about age, we have a lot of control over what that looks like. What’s thought of as “normal” aging simply means what we “commonly” see in the general population. When you look at active and athletic older adults, things look quite a bit different. According to Joe Friel, in his book Fast after 50, “humans were meant to be active, to move vigorously and strenuously — just as you do as an athlete.” If we stop moving that way, we risk losing our ability to move the way we should. Getting stiff, uncoordinated, lacking agility, loss of balance and power are not necessarily because we age out of those abilities, it’s simply that we stop using those abilities and therefore lose them. But we can get them back! All we need to do is start playing again. Play like we did when we were kids (well almost like that). If it’s been a while start with the basics and work your way back according to what’s possible for your particular body. But the goal should be – move vigorously and strenuously! At any age. Our older generations are rewriting what we thought was possible. That’s exciting!
